High Risk Obstetrics

This two-day course is designed for the nurse caring for patients with obstetrical complications and/or a pregnancy complicated with pre-existing medical conditions. The instructor will cover the fundamentals of common complications of pregnancy, labor & delivery, and OB emergencies. Maternal physiologic adaptations to pregnancy will be introduced and deviations from normal pregnancy values reviewed. Nursing assessment and nursing interventions will be discussed for such complications as:

  • Hypertension
  • Cardiac disease
  • Diabetes
  • Preterm Labor/PPROM
  • Bleeding conditions/Hemorrhage/DIC
  • Assessment of fetal well-being
  • Pulmonary complications
  • Lab value interpretation
  • OB Trauma
  • Amniotic fluid embolism (Anaphylactic Syndrome of Pregnancy)
